Connect a phone or tablet to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

Simple steps for Android, iPhone and iPad, plus fixes for passwords, missing devices and “connected, no internet”.

Prepared for Brisbane DailyChecked

Desk researched using manufacturer and official guidance. Menu names vary by model and software; use Settings search or the model’s manual if the labels differ.

Expanded with a worked example and success checks on 29 October 2026.

Before you start

Have the exact home network name and Wi-Fi password ready. A router’s admin password is not necessarily its Wi-Fi password. Charge the accessory and find its pairing instructions. A Wi-Fi-only tablet cannot use mobile data by itself; it needs Wi-Fi or a suitable hotspot.

Join Wi-Fi on iPhone or iPad

  1. Open Settings → Wi-Fi and switch Wi-Fi on.
  2. Choose the network you recognise, enter its password carefully and tap Join.
  3. Look for the tick beside its name, then open a webpage to confirm internet access.

Join Wi-Fi on Android

  1. Open Settings → Network & internet → Internet. On many Samsung devices, use Settings → Connections → Wi-Fi. You can also search Settings for “Wi-Fi”.
  2. Switch Wi-Fi on, select the network, enter the password and choose Connect.
  3. Check the connection label, then try a webpage. A Wi-Fi symbol alone does not prove the internet is working.

Pair a Bluetooth accessory

  1. Put headphones, a speaker or another accessory into pairing mode using its own instructions. Keep it close and disconnect it from another phone if needed.
  2. On Apple devices, open Settings → Bluetooth. On Android, open Bluetooth settings and choose Pair new device or look under Available devices.
  3. Select the accessory’s name. Check any matching code on both screens and accept only a pairing request you recognise.
  4. Play a short sound or test the accessory’s intended function. If sound still comes from the phone, choose the accessory in the audio-output menu.

Public networks and forgotten passwords

Confirm the network name with the venue. A hotel or café may require a sign-in page; do not enter your email or banking password as a Wi-Fi password. If the login page does not appear, reconnect and check for a network sign-in notification. Do not bypass certificate warnings. For travel-specific precautions, see overseas phones and roaming.

When to get help

If every device fails on the same home network, contact the internet provider after checking its outage notice. If only one device fails on several known working networks, use its manufacturer’s support. Avoid a factory reset as an early step: it erases data. For a TV on the same network, use Smart TV networking.

Test one connection at a time

If Bluetooth headphones work but a webpage will not open, keep the two problems separate: Bluetooth success does not prove internet access. Use the Wi-Fi checks first, then move to TV networking only if the television is affected too.

  1. After joining Wi-Fi, open a webpage with mobile data briefly disabled, then restore your usual setting.
  2. After pairing headphones, play a short sound and confirm the selected audio output.
  3. If the test fails, note whether it affects one device, one app or every device on the network.

Common problems & fixes

Incorrect password

Check capitals, spaces and similar characters. Ask the network owner to confirm the Wi-Fi password. Forget and rejoin only when you have the password.

Connected, no internet

Try another device on that Wi-Fi. If it also fails, the problem is likely beyond the phone. Restart your own router if safe, allowing its normal reconnection time; do not press its factory-reset button.

Accessory not listed

Charge it, bring it close and re-enter pairing mode. It may already be attached to another phone. If forgetting a pairing, be ready to pair again.

Compare another app and another device on the same network, then change one thing and test again.

Getting more help

What information should I give support?

Give the device model, software version, exact error text and the checks you have already tried. Explain whether the issue affects one app, one device or several. Remove personal information from screenshots. Never share a password, recovery code or one-time sign-in code.

What if my menus look different?

Use Settings search for the feature name and check the official instructions for the exact model. Do not choose a reset option just because it is the closest label you can find. If you still need help, contact the site owner with the guide title and the unclear step.
