Brisbane heritage buildings: entry and viewing

Heritage status does not itself grant public entry. Check the venue’s conditions before visiting.

Desk researched from the official sources below; not a first-hand venue inspection.

Three heritage access types: exterior viewing, open interiors and booked tours.

Brisbane City Hall · public building and booked tours

Explore heritage-listed City Hall through the council’s visitor information. Guided City Hall and Clock Tower tours are free, but reserve the appropriate tour and check capacity, access and current availability. A public building can still have rooms closed for events or official business.

Old Government House · free admission

At QUT Gardens Point, Old Government House offers free public admission. Its published opening pattern is Tuesday–Friday 10 am–4 pm and Sunday 10 am–2 pm, with Monday, Saturday and public-holiday closures. Check the venue page before travel for exceptions and tour arrangements.

Parliament House · tour and security conditions

Queensland Parliament offers free general public tours on weekdays excluding public holidays, subject to changes or cancellations. The operator requires government-issued photo identification. Check its current departure times, entry location and gallery conditions; do not assume unrestricted access to the working building.

Commissariat Store Museum · paid museum entry

The historic convict-built store at 115 William Street is a museum operated by the Royal Historical Society of Queensland. Its published opening is Tuesday–Friday 10 am–4 pm, closed Saturday–Monday. Admission is charged, with concession, child and family categories. Check current fees and access arrangements directly.

Viewing responsibly

For buildings that are closed, view only from public streets or areas explicitly open to visitors. Respect private property, security screening, services and photography restrictions. Contact each venue about step-free access; an exterior that is easy to see does not guarantee accessible interiors.

Plan by access type

For a relaxed heritage outing, distinguish three kinds of visit.

  • Exterior viewing: use public streets and clearly open grounds; this does not include permission to enter.
  • Open museum or gallery: check hours, admission and any ticketed exhibition separately.
  • Guided or secured entry: reserve a place, arrive for the stated check-in and bring any required identification.

A manageable half-day

Start with City Hall and King George Square, then choose one additional interior. If you have a timed City Hall or Clock Tower tour, build the day around that booking. Old Government House pairs naturally with a garden visit on a day it is open. Our free one-day route links the city and South Bank; it is not necessary to enter every building.

Before travelling

Check the venue’s own page for closures or changed access, even if a map says “open”. Ask about the specific entrance, lifts and any stairs on a tour. Check photography rules before taking pictures of interiors or other visitors. Use the journey planner and service updates to plan the approach.

How to read the conditions in this guide

Opening patterns are a snapshot, not a booking confirmation. The heritage guide is researched from venue information, not a report that Brisbane Daily staff inspected each site. Let us know about a changed entry condition through Contact the site owner.

A history visit with limited time

Pick a priority interior, check its opening conditions, then build a small walking route around it. Avoid treating exterior viewing as a failed visit: details such as façades, street setting and public interpretation can still make the stop worthwhile. Use the one-day guide for nearby gardens and cultural stops, and the journey planner for the start and finish.

Questions before you go

Can I go inside any heritage-listed building?

No. Heritage status is not permission to enter. A building can be privately occupied, closed for work or accessible only on a tour.

How should I choose between a building tour and a ghost walk?

Choose the building tour for its stated interior access and historical interpretation. The paid CBD ghost tour is an outdoor storytelling experience. Compare its conditions in free events and ghost tours.
