Save phone battery and reduce unwanted notifications

Find the main battery drain, remove unused apps carefully and keep the calls and alerts you need.

Prepared for Brisbane DailyChecked

Desk researched using manufacturer and official guidance. Menu names vary by model and software; use Settings search or the model’s manual if the labels differ.

See what is using power

Open Settings → Battery and review usage by app. Heavy navigation, video and weak mobile reception can explain a busy day’s drain. Do not judge only by an app’s percentage: check how much you used it. Recent setup or updates can temporarily increase activity. If a phone is unusually hot, swollen or damaged, stop using it and seek manufacturer advice rather than trying “battery booster” apps.

Turn on built-in power saving

  1. Android: search Settings for Battery Saver or Power saving; enable it and review its options.
  2. iPhone: open Settings → Battery. On iPhone 15 and later, look under Power Mode → Low Power Mode; on earlier models, Low Power Mode is in Battery settings.
  3. Expect reduced background work and possible delays to sync or some features. Test important apps after changing settings.

Make the screen work less

Reduce brightness to a comfortable level and shorten the screen timeout or Auto-Lock. Use downloaded maps or music instead of repeatedly streaming when practical. Keep the phone out of direct heat. The aim is fewer unnecessary demands, not making the device too dim or difficult to use.

Remove an app safely

  1. Check whether the app contains files, messages or sign-in tools you need. Back up important information first; do not delete your only authenticator or banking access by mistake.
  2. Android: open Play Store → profile → Manage apps & devices → Manage, choose the app and Uninstall. Some preinstalled apps cannot be removed.
  3. iPhone: hold the app → Remove App → Delete App. Remove from Home Screen only hides it in App Library. Deletion can remove local data; cancelling a paid subscription is a separate task.

Choose which notifications matter

Android: Settings → Notifications → App notifications lets you adjust an app or its available categories. On iPhone, use Settings → Notifications → the app. Reduce promotional alerts while keeping useful calls, messages and essential reminders. Check Do Not Disturb or Focus if expected alerts disappear. After changes, ask someone to make a test call or send a test message.

Keep enough charge for the day

Carry a suitable charging cable or power bank when you need your phone for tickets, maps or appointments. See Suncorp transport and hospital travel for situations where an offline copy is useful. For silent rings and message problems, see phone basics.

Check that the savings are worth the trade-off

For a long day out, preserve access to tickets, directions and calls before cutting every background feature. If your ring is silent after changing alerts, use phone basics. For an outage plan, read storm preparation.

  1. Change a small number of settings, then compare a typical day rather than repeatedly changing everything.
  2. Ask a trusted person to test a call and message after adjusting notifications or restrictions.
  3. Keep a note of which essential apps were restricted so you can reverse a change that delays them.

Common problems & fixes

Battery still drops rapidly

Restart normally, install official updates and compare usage over a typical day. If the battery condition is poor or drain persists, ask the manufacturer about diagnosis or replacement.

Important notifications arrive late

Review the app’s notification permission and power-saving restrictions. Stronger battery restrictions can delay background delivery; allow essential apps to work as intended.

Phone does not ring

Check ring volume, silent mode and Focus/Do Not Disturb. Media volume is a different setting. Check whether calls are routed to a Bluetooth accessory.

Getting more help

What information should I give support?

Give the device model, software version, exact error text and the checks you have already tried. Explain whether the issue affects one app, one device or several. Remove personal information from screenshots. Never share a password, recovery code or one-time sign-in code.

What if my menus look different?

Use Settings search for the feature name and check the official instructions for the exact model. Do not choose a reset option just because it is the closest label you can find. If you still need help, contact the site owner with the guide title and the unclear step.
