Before you set out

This route focuses on well-known central sights with free access options, rather than claiming to fit every Brisbane attraction into a day. Start around 10 am for museum and gallery opening times. Use Brisbane weather to choose shade, indoor stops and a suitable finish. Pack water, sun protection and a picnic to keep spending down. Check Services for disruptions.

10 am · City Hall and Museum of Brisbane

Begin at King George Square for the City Hall exterior, then visit Museum of Brisbane on Level 3 when open. General admission is free; some programs or exhibitions may charge. If you want a Clock Tower or City Hall tour, check the current booking arrangements and available time slots first. Allow roughly an hour here; a timed tour may change your sequence.

11.15 am · Walk to the cultural precinct

Walk towards the river and across Victoria Bridge to the South Brisbane cultural precinct, using signed pedestrian routes. Allow about 20–30 minutes at an easy pace, longer with stops. QAG and GOMA are separate buildings: pick one or choose a few collection rooms rather than rushing through both. General gallery entry is free, with some exhibitions ticketed. Allow 60–90 minutes; confirm hours and closures.

12.45 pm · South Bank, the Arbour and a picnic

Continue through South Bank Parklands for riverside views, gardens and the landmark Arbour. Have your picnic in a suitable public area and take rubbish away. Streets Beach is a free option when open: check current conditions and signs, supervise children and bring swimwear if you intend to swim. You can simply enjoy the setting without swimming. Give this stop about an hour.

2 pm · Goodwill Bridge to City Botanic Gardens

Walk south through the parklands and use Goodwill Bridge to reach Gardens Point. Explore the City Botanic Gardens at your own pace, with shade and rest stops. The gardens are a free central-city alternative to a distant day trip. Allow 60–90 minutes for the crossing and gardens. Old Government House is a possible extra on its opening days; our heritage guide explains its conditions.

3.30 pm · Choose a gentle finish or more river views

Finish in the CBD if the group is tired. For more walking, consider the Kangaroo Point Bridge pedestrian crossing for city and river views; check the current approach and any closures first. Do not add a second long excursion just to complete a checklist. Mount Coot-tha, New Farm and an extended Story Bridge walk are better treated as alternatives or another day, not compulsory additions.

Make the day work for your group

In wet or very hot weather, spend longer in one gallery or the museum and shorten the outdoor loop. For a shorter day, choose City Hall plus South Bank, or just the cultural precinct and parklands. Check step-free routes, lift availability, gradients and toilets with the venues if needed; this itinerary does not certify the full route as accessible. Browse current free events if you prefer a scheduled activity.

What is free, and what is not

Walking the public route and the listed free admission options need no attraction ticket. A special exhibition, café meal, guided experience, parking or travel to the starting point may cost money. Brisbane CityCats and Cross River ferries are paid services; do not rely on older advice about a free CityHopper. Use our TransLink Journey Planner for the start and return, and check the current fare with Translink.

Three ways to trim the itinerary

For an art-focused day, spend longer at QAG or GOMA and shorten the gardens. For a family outing, leave more time at South Bank and skip the optional river extension. For a history-focused day, give City Hall more time and use the heritage guide to choose one extra venue. These are alternatives, not extra stops to squeeze into the same day.

Questions before you go

Can this really be a completely free day?

The selected public walking route and free-admission options can be enjoyed without buying an attraction ticket. Bring your own food and water. Getting to the start, parking, meals and ticketed exhibitions may still cost money.

What should I cut if I only have half a day?

Choose one compact area: the cultural precinct and South Bank, or City Hall and a garden or riverside walk. Keep the other stops for another visit rather than rushing the full route. Check current events before adding a timed activity.
